Ian Wright blasts ’embarrassing’ Everton appeal news in Manchester City ‘dancing’ verdict
Ian Wright thinks Manchester City lawyers will have the Premier League “dancing” after the outcome of an Everton appeal against a 10-point deduction was announced.
The Toffees were hit with the punishment after being found guilty of flouting Profit and Sustainability rules but were handed four back following an appeal against the ruling.
Everton challenged the initial decision on nine grounds with two of those upheld (Sky Sports, 27 February) and Wright thinks that City – who were hit with 115 charges – will view it as good news for their own case.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast (29 February), a baffled Wright said: “If you’ve got people doing that job and they’ve got nine to look over or whatever it is and they get them wrong to the point they have to give points back – what are Man City’s lawyers going to do to people like this?
“They’re gonna have them dancing. It’s like ridiculous how they can get that wrong. I think personally what should have happened is, they should do what they’re doing, ‘right we’re fining you you’re gonna get 10 points’ then they say ‘right we’re gonna appeal’, let them appeal then we find out after the appeal then you do the judgement.
“How are you gonna do it before? How do you get into this embarrassing situation?”
When will Manchester City verdict be announced after Everton appeal news?
Ian Wright is right in some ways here and wrong in others.
It was a ridiculous situation and it was embarrassing how it was handled, that is absolutely for sure. It seems from the outside looking in that a number was plucked out of thin air.

But his idea for how the process should have run isn’t really feasible. Waiting until the possibility of an appeal to reveal any news would have led to more confusion and speculation than we already had.
In terms of his view on City’s own charges, well he might have a point we just don’t know how that will go. Will we hear a verdict anytime soon? Probably not. After all, there are 115 charges to sift through so the process will take a lot longer.
Obviously now, Everton will be anxiously awaiting news on when the result of their second charge for allegedly flouting PSR rules will be heard.
