Oliver Holt has taken aim at Chelsea after they replaced usual suspects Everton, Crystal Palace and Burnley as the last-shown team on Match of the Day after their draw with Brentford.

The Daily Mail journalist wrote in its print edition [5 March, page 69] that, having spent over £1billion on their squad the Blues' "slide into irrelevance" comes as a shock.

Usually reserved for the most dull or unimportant of the weekend's fixtures, it's not often Chelsea fans have found themselves in that position, but such has been their form this season.

Everton may be poor - but at least they're not irrelevant

Like it or not, the circumstances surrounding Everton both on and off the pitch this season have made them far from a boring watch. Every result has consequences, win, lose or draw, while the narrative surrounding the club always makes for a talking point.

The questions surrounding profit and sustainability, concerns about the ongoing takeover talks and the threat of further points deductions, mean even a 0-0 bore draw could have a huge impact on both their and other club's seasons.

With a relegation battle raging on in the foreground, without considering possible further penalties, Luton, Nottingham Forest and Brentford fans will also be tracking the results of Sean Dyche's men.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have faded into relative obscurity. Sitting in a mid-table position, with results not going in their favour no longer a shock, their fans are now being given a taste of what mediocrity looks like.

Everton are a huge football club, and it is about time people stop acting like they are not.
