Manchester United stadium project update shared by Andy Burnham as Everton comparison made
Andy Burnham has reiterated that Manchester United will not be relying solely on public money with regards to their stadium project as a comparison was made with the new Everton ground.
United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to build a new stadium near Old Trafford, while a regeneration of the ageing ground is another possibility.
A taskforce will decide in the second half of 2024 which route to go down, but either way United will have to find a balance when it comes to financing any work, as Everton have done with their stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock.
“It has to be a public and private partnership,” Burnham said on Sky Sports News [11 March, 14:24pm].
“It’s not all about throwing public money into the stadium – it’s got to be a partnership, as every other stadium project has been.
“Look at Everton at Bramley-Moore, with Liverpool City Region putting in the enabling work around the new stadium. It’s the same here with this.”
Who is financing Everton’s new stadium?
Everton’s state-of-the-art new ground has really come on over the past few months and is on course to be finished by the end of 2024.
As sad as it is to depart long-time home Goodison Park, a move to this massive new stadium is undoubtedly a positive for the club.
As with Man United, certain funds will be made available via public funds, but the majority will come through money raised privately.
In Everton’s case, the club enlisted the help of major international banks JP Morgan and MUFG to help secure said finances.

Like Goodison Park, Old Trafford is starting to show its age and United are at risk of being left behind by their rivals if they stay there as it is.
If the option of upgrading the ground is there, that would go down well with fans. But sometimes that is not feasible, as was the case with Everton.
That is a problem for United to contend with, though, as Everton get ready to move into their incredible new stadium within the next year or so.
In other Everton news, Newcastle United scouts have reportedly been watching a couple of Toffees players up close.
