Everton: ‘Big-money’ Amadou Onana transfer mooted as Romelu Lukaku comparison made
Everton ace Amadou Onana needs to “earn the right” for a big-money transfer, according to Michael Ball.
The pundit believes the midfielder is using his time at Goodison Park as a stepping stone, much like former Toffees star Romelu Lukaku.
According to Sport Bild (11 March), the Merseyside outfit have demanded £51.1million for his signature after turning down a £34million bid from Barcelona.
“Amadou Onana looked to showcase his talents when he came on at Manchester City a month ago but I didn’t see that against Manchester United,” Ball wrote for the Liverpool Echo (11 March).
“I used to dig out Romelu Lukaku a lot when he was at Everton because I knew he had the talent and was looking to use the club as a stepping stone to something else. I’ve got no issues with that but these players need to earn the right for their big-money move.
Will Amadou Onana leave Everton in the summer transfer window?
Onana has had quite the time of it during his relatively brief spell at Goodison Park, having joined from Lille in August 2022.
The Belgium international arrived on a five-year deal, but it remains to be seen if he will remain at the club beyond the summer.
It seems that Spanish giants Barcelona are not the only club interested in the midfielder, who will undoubtedly have plenty of suitors at the end of the season.
Everton manager Sean Dyche will be reluctant to lose the talented Belgian ace, although a silver lining could arise from the fee that he would likely garner.
The Merseyside outfit are in deep financial trouble and could therefore be forced to sell a senior star in the summer, and that may just be Onana.
And given his displays at Goodison Park this season amid his club’s overall struggles, the fee to force Everton into his sale should be very significant.
