Everton: Simon Jordan and Jim White clash over PSR change as ‘irrelevant’ claim made

Jim White questioned whether it is fair that Everton face being further punished under the current financial rules that are soon to be abolished.

The Premier League is set to replace the much derided current Profit and Sustainability Rules with a new system as early as this summer.

That comes after Everton have already been deducted six points this season, with a further points punishment also likely to be forthcoming.

Simon Jordan argued that Everton have rightly been punished, but believes updating the regulations beyond this season also makes sense.

“They’ve hit Nottingham Forest hard and may hit Manchester City hard,” White said on talkSPORT [12 March].

“The soon-to-be abolished rules are still hanging over the heads of Everton, Forest and City. Is that right?

Jordan then weighed in: “Soon to be amended, and sophisticated. When they were originally introduced there was not the same implications of £105million. It was something different.

“Rules and laws evolve and you get judged by the rules of the time. With that in mind, it’s kind of irrelevant.

“And don’t forget that Everton’s transgressions go back three years, not just three months. We’re not talking about something that happened a week ago.”

Asked why the rules are changing, Jordan added: “Like everything else, when you gather more intelligence and the industry wants to evolve forwards and start to look at the consequences and the challenges… like VAR.”

Everton and Nottingham Forest awaiting PSR punishment verdict

The Premier League wanted to make an example out of Everton with the 10-point deduction earlier this season, which has since been found to have been far too harsh.

A second penalty is now imminent, yet the laws are soon about to change. Even non-Everton supporters are now starting to see why this is all rather farcical.

Sean Dyche is facing new pressure at Everton

The Premier League is effectively holding its hands up and saying the current regulations are not fit for purpose, and yet here Everton are facing a second points deduction.

Should the Toffees avoid relegation this season, a line can be drawn under the whole sorry scenario and everyone can move on. If not, though, the legal proceedings are set to rumble on.

As we have known from the beginning, the Premier League are continuing to make things up as we go along. If that was not clear to the wider world beforehand, it certainly will be now.
