Everton: Paul Merson shares Jarrad Branthwaite England rant live on Sky Sports
Paul Merson has expressed his concern about Jarrad Branthwaite after the Everton star was called up to Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad to face Belgium and Brazil.
The former Arsenal midfielder insisted that he must start both games in this break to acclimatise to international football, but claimed Harry Maguire is still ahead of him in the pecking order.
A comparison was drawn to former Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross and Merson recounted his England debut in which he struggled to deal with the step up in quality.
Speaking live on Sky Sports News [16 March, 12:34], Merson ranted: “Maguire is ahead of him, but he’s got to play against Brazil and Belgium. I like him, but the problem is when you watch that video, everything’s on the edge of their box.
“England don’t play on the edge of their box, England are going to be dominating teams at the Euros, playing on the halfway line. I’d play him and Konsa at the back, you need to play against these teams. For me, they’ve got to play against Belgium and Brazil.
“You see Ryan Shawcross, he made his debut playing against Ibrahimovic and didn’t know what day it was the poor lad. He never got another chance. That’s how hard it is, there are levels.”
Jarrad Branthwaite should shine for England after Everton displays
Given the level of the defender’s performances in the Premier League this season, which has earned him plenty of praise from pundits, the step up to play for England should be seen as a huge positive both for him and for Everton.
Merson, however, is correct to have raised concerns surrounding the differences in a style of play. The change between a deep block without much possession, and a high line with the majority, can be difficult for players to adapt to.
Branthwaite, however, has an abundance of pace at his disposal as well as excellent timing of his challenges, which can often bail him and his side out if a run in behind the back line catches them out.

This latest development surrounding the defender’s progress will only highlight his ability further, and with the likes of Manchester United, Newcastle and Real Madrid watching on, a big-money move could be on the cards this summer.
