Everton: Second breach hearing now due as Nottingham Forest hit by Premier League

Everton are now closer to their hearing for a second breach of Profit and Sustainability rules after reportedly Nottingham Forest learned their fate on Monday, Joe Thomas has said.

The Guardian reported (18 March) that the Tricky Trees have been hit with a four-point deduction for flouting the Premier League’s PSR rules, although they do have the right to appeal.

Everton had an appeal against a 10-point deduction partially upheld last month and had their own punishment reduced to six.

However, the Toffees could still lose more points as they were hit with a second PSR charge, a hearing for which will likely take place soon given Forest’s has come to an end.

Writing in the Liverpool Echo (18 March) Thomas commented: “The Blues, now four points clear of Forest, are due to face a hearing over a second alleged breach later this month.

“The ruling had been widely expected on Monday, signalling the continuation of developments within the relegation battle even without a ball being kicked.

“The top flight today begins a two-week break for international action but drama was anticipated despite that gap between games. More will unfold with Everton’s hearing soon to take place and with any punishment stemming from that expected to be imposed this season as well.”

Everton now sweating again after Nottingham Forest news

This whole scenario has been a dark cloud hanging over Everton pretty much all season and it has to be said that the Premier League’s handling of the situation for all clubs involved has been pretty shambolic.

No one ever wants to see the Premier League table decided by an asterisk and the fact that we’re two months away from the end of the season and there are still hearings and appeals to be had just makes it a baffling scenario.

The news about Forest means that at least we are drawing closer to this whole sorry chapter coming to a definitive end but it feels like there will be more twists and uncertainty to come before we get to that point.

Moreover, the immediate question Everton supporters will want to know is: how come Everton’s breach resulted in a six-point deduction but Forest’s only yielded four? Another situation that just doesn’t make sense.
