Kieran Maguire explains Everton verdict amid Nottingham Forest PSR update live on talkSPORT

Kieran Maguire has explained the difference between punishments for Everton and Nottingham Forest after their respective Profit and Sustainability rulings.

It was reported by The Guardian (18 March) that Forest have been hit with a four-point deduction for flouting the Premier League’s financial rules, albeit they have the right to appeal against the decision.

The Toffees, on the other hand, were originally given a 10-point deduction, which was reduced to six after an appeal from Goodison Park was partially upheld. However, further punishment could be handed to Everton as they await a hearing for a second breach.

Speaking live via talkSPORT on Monday (18 March, 3:07pm), finance expert Maguire said: “It sounds as if the amount by which Forest have exceeded the limit is lower than that of Everton.

“Everton exceeded by £20million over a three-year period. This would suggest that Forest are significantly lower than that, and that has formed part of the tariff.”

Why have Everton been deducted more points than Nottingham Forest?

The answer, seemingly, comes down to the amount of money lost over the £105million threshold over a three-year period.

Fans have been utterly confused by the difference between the deduction handed to Forest, and the one that arrived at Goodison Park earlier this season.

Though the Toffees had their punishment reduced to six points, the Reds have still been handed a lighter deduction, which has been explained by Maguire if he is correct.

Fans and pundits will continue to discuss the situations over the next few weeks, but Sean Dyche and his team will be turning their attention to their next run of games as the campaign nears the end.

Sean Dyche’s Everton side have faced plenty of challenges both on and off the pitch this season.

The four-point deduction at The City Ground will see Forest drop into the relegation zone, going one point below Luton Town, who have earned plaudits for their battle against the drop this season.

Currently, on an 11-match winless streak in the Premier League, Everton will be hoping to take full advantage of the recent update and win their first league game since a 2-0 victory over Burnley in December when they visit Bournemouth on March 30.
