Finance Expert expects Chelsea to face ‘more severe’ charges than Everton and Nottingham Forest
Chelsea could be facing “more severe” charges than Everton and Nottingham Forest this time next year, according to Stefan Borson.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Tuesday (19 March, 11:42am), the finance expert said the scale of the losses that the West London club are currently forecasting appears to be “vastly in excess” of both the Toffees and Forest, who have been hit with points deductions this season.
Simon Jordan believes there are going to have to be sales in the region of £200million at Stamford Bridge to avoid the club being in breach of the Premier League’s spending rules.
“What Stefan is saying is that it’s absolutely inconceivable that by December of next year that Chelsea won’t be facing a charge unless there is a complete sea change in the rules, a complete rowing back from the perspective,” said Jordan.
“If you’re looking at Chelsea’s numbers, unless they’re going to go and sell somewhere in the region of £200million worth of players that have a low-cost base on them, players that Chelsea are least likely to sell, they’re going to be in the situation that Nottingham Forest and Everton have been in this time next year.”
“Would you go with that Stefan that Chelsea are looking at a predicament similar to the one Forest and Everton find themselves in?” asked host Jim White.
“Well, possibly more severe,” replied Borson. “I think that the scale of the losses that they’re currently forecasting appear to me to be vastly in excess of both Everton and Nottingham Forest.”
Chelsea staring down barrel of charges after Everton situation
There has been quite a bit of surprise amongst many interested onlookers that Chelsea haven’t already been in breach of the Premier League’s spending rules after their recent transfer activity.
But it appears as though they made it through the latest round of checks after selling on homegrown talents such as Mason Mount for hefty transfer fees last summer.
They will, however, need to sanction yet more sales in the next transfer window to stay on the right side of the line, and that could mean they will need to sell more first-team players.

If they are found to be in breach of the rules, it will be interesting to see how the governing body acts and whether it follows the precedents that have been set in the Toffees and Forest cases.
It sounds like it’s a potentially worrying time to be a Chelsea fan, but the club do still have some time on their hands to try and resolve the situation.
