Everton shareholder reacts to Gary Neville Jordan Pickford admission

Mike Parry has lauded Brian Viner for his comments on Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after what Gary Neville said.

In his Daily Mail column on 19 March, Viner called out the likes of Neville, Guardian journalist Barney Ronay and others who questioned if the Toffees star deserves to be the number one for England at the EUROs.

Despite performing exceptionally between the sticks for Gareth Southgate’s side since the 2018 World Cup, certain sections of the media and pundits find ways to criticise the 30-year-old.

Neville was paraphrased in the article as saying that he does not perform as well for his club as he does for his country.

Via Twitter, Parry, a Toffees shareholder responded to that article and wrote: “One of the best pieces of sports journalism I’ve read in a very long time from top writer.”

Pickford deserves Everton and England number one spot for excellent displays

The criticism levied at Pickford is unjustified and shortsighted as since his debut in 2017, he has consistently demonstrated excellence for England, particularly in crucial moments such as the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020.

His performance in the latter tournament, including saving two penalties in the final shootout against Italy, was instrumental in England’s success.

Critics unfairly focus on past mistakes, ignoring Pickford’s significant contributions and growth as a goalkeeper.

His agility, quick thinking and distribution skills have been pivotal for both club and country.

Furthermore, his commitment to improvement, evidenced by his dedication to training and seeking support from sports psychologists, should be commended.

The disproportionate scrutiny he faces, particularly in comparison to other players, reflects biases and outdated narratives rather than an objective assessment of his abilities.

There is a good chance that he will become the most capped England goalkeeper of all time and that’s commendable not something worthy of criticism.

He is a vital asset to the team and should be celebrated for his consistent performances, especially as England prepare for a major tournament.

In other Everton news, there is pressure mounting as the Toffees’ financial future is in doubt amid a fresh takeover twist.
