Kieran Maguire shares ‘best-case scenario’ for Everton amid second PSR charge
There is a potential case for Everton to receive a zero-point reduction ahead of their second spending breach hearing, according to Kieran Maguire.
Speaking on The Price of Football podcast on Thursday (21 March), the football finance expert said the Toffees could receive a three-point deduction for breaking the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR) and that could be reduced to one point because they’ve already been punished for 2021/22.
He added that if the Blues have been proactive and assisted the commission during the process, then they could see their penalty reduced by a further point to ensure they don’t receive any deduction on the back of the six-point penalty they have already been handed.
“I’m going to give a best-case scenario for Everton,” said Maguire. “They get a three points deduction and we then say that you’ve already been punished for going over the limit in 2021/22 and you’re being assessed for 2020/21, 2021/22, 2022/23. So, therefore, we’re going to reduce the points deduction by two-thirds, that takes us down to one point.
“If Everton have been proactive, if they have assisted the commission, then there is a case for saying that for good behaviour, we should give you a further one-point reduction in the tariff. So, yes, you’ve breached the rules, but based on this particular set of circumstances, the punishment is a zero-point deduction.
“That might seem a bit strange, but looking at what we’ve seen in respect of Forest, there is a case for putting that forward.”
Scenario would be huge bonus for Everton
It would be a huge bonus for Everton if they weren’t handed a further points deduction ahead of the upcoming hearing over their second charge.
It has been revealed that the hearing is set to be heard next week and that will, hopefully, provide some welcome clarity after the shambolic situation that has unfolded over the past few months.
While the Toffees admitted their guilt on both charges, there is a feeling that they were certainly hard done by on the first ruling, particularly given that Nottingham Forest have now just been handed a four-point deduction.

You would expect the Blues have been working closely with the commission behind the scenes to try and ensure that the point deduction is as low as possible.
But even though it appears that there is a change no further penalty could be coming their way, there will no doubt be some concerned people on Merseyside right up until the verdict is given.
