Everton: ‘First-class’ Harry Tyrer surely set to make step up after what he’s done

Everton keeper Harry Tyrer is now surely set to make a step up next season after impressing out on loan with Chesterfield.

The 22-year-old has played an integral role in helping the Spireites build up what looks to be an unassailable lead at the top of the National League table.

They currently sit 21 points above second-placed Barnet and can earn promotion back to the Football League with a point against Boreham Wood on Saturday (23 March).

Tyrer joined the Derbyshire club after catching the eye out on loan with National League North side Chester in the previous campaign, where he kept 18 clean sheets in 47 appearances before losing out in the playoff semi-finals.

He’s backed that up with 11 shut-outs in 39 games this season, having been called to action plenty of times as Paul Cook’s side are often expansive and look to outscore the opposition.

In an interview on the Everton website back in October, the Chesterfield manager spoke about the impact Tyrer has had at the club, praising him for his “absolutely first-class” work ethic.

“From the minute he came through the door, his appetite to train and his work ethic have been absolutely first-class,” said Cook. “In terms of goalkeeping in first teams, he’s very young, so he’s learning on the job. But his overall form has been excellent.

“I think the biggest compliment you can pay Harry is how quickly he’s settled into our environment, and how quickly he’s integrated into the rest of the squad.

“As a goalkeeper, every day, he looks to get better, and Harry absolutely is improving. He’s taking everything in his stride, and we’re really delighted with him and we’re very thankful to Everton for allowing us to play a part in Harry’s development.”

There is no doubt that the Toffees fans would one day like to see Tyrer go on to play for the first team after joining the club’s academy when he was just seven years old.

The boyhood Blues fan, who was born in Crosby, put in a number of strong performances for the youth sides before heading out on loan over the past two seasons.

It’s unlikely he will be involved in the first team for the next campaign as an understudy to first-choice keeper Jordan Pickford, but he will surely be set for another step up in divisions.

That could potentially come with Chesterfield if they decide to try and land him on a temporary basis again, with the club on the verge of securing their place in League Two for next season.

It’s hard to call how Tyrer’s career could pan and whether or not he will make the grade at Goodison, but he’s still young for a keeper and has been making good strides out on loan.
