Everton: Stan Collymore demands rule change amid Nottingham Forest PSR rule breach
Stan Collymore has called for a rule change by the Premier League ahead of Everton facing a second points deduction for PSR rule breaches.
The Toffees were deducted ten points earlier this season, reduced to six on appeal, while Nottingham Forest were deducted four points last week for a breach at almost double the value financially.
Everton now face a second hearing for a further rule breach next week which could see them deducted points once again, but writing in his column for Caught Offside (22 March), Collymore believes the rules should be changed to give teams more of a chance to compete.
“However, the rules now have to change to allow clubs outside of the “Big Six” to compete because those that are guaranteed Champions League every year are just creating a bigger and bigger gap,” he said.
“It will probably need to be done in the form of some sort of wage cap and only then will we get to see the best teams and a competitive Premier League throughout.”
Everton need clarity not deductions
Everton broke the rules, no doubt, and so did Nottingham Forest but the inconsistencies in the two cases are there for all to see.
The fact that the Toffees weren’t afforded mitigation for the fact there was a war and they lost a major sponsor but Forest were given leniency for having to sell Brennan Johnson is simply pathetic.
But aside from that, punishing the fans and players with points deductions for something that has absolutely nothing to do with them makes no sense and is just terrible.

Gary Neville recently suggested that the best way to ensure nobody can pull away or be left behind is to make everyone able to spend the same amount as the top earning club.
That seems sensible, while a wage cap also makes sense. Ultimately though the rules need to change to be able to make it a more level playing field, or there will be a monopoly in football a lot sooner than expected.
