Everton Women: Clare Wheeler delivers ‘unfortunate’ verdict after Merseyside derby

Clare Wheeler has reacted after Everton Women claimed a 0-0 draw against Merseyside rivals Liverpool in the Women’s Super League on Sunday (24 March).

The clash was held at Goodison Park as the men’s game is on an international break with 9,457 fans pouring in to watch the clash (BBC Sport).

The game was evenly matched, and so too was the scoreline, as the rivals played out a stalemate, much to the disappointment of Everton midfielder Wheeler.

Speaking to EvertonTV after the match on Sunday (24 March), the 26-year-old said: “It was a physical game but it’s a derby. That’s what you want, it’s going to be a fight, it’s going to be a tussle. Credit to both teams, it was tough.

“It’s unfortunate we couldn’t come away with the win for them [the fans], but it just shows that the community is behind us.”

Everton Women prove point against Merseyside rivals

In a disappointing season in the Women’s Super League, keeping your rivals at bay in front of a huge home crowd is certainly one way to put things right.

The Toffees have experienced a tough season, with Brian Sorensen’s side suffering 10 losses from their 17 fixtures so far, only managing four wins.

This has placed them in 10th place, only two spots above bottom-side Bristol City, but it may not be all doom and gloom for Everton.

With remaining matches against Manchester United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and the Robins, the Evertonians will feel they have a point to prove before the season finishes.

They could yet finish above Leicester City, Brighton and Aston Villa, with all four sides only separated by four points, and add to their superb FA Cup run this campaign.

Having smashed past Villa and Nottingham Forest in the cup competition, the Everton Women narrowly lost out to Chelsea for a spot in the semi-final, which could have cast a very different light on the season.

In other Everton news, there is pressure mounting as the Toffees’ financial future is in doubt amid a fresh takeover twist.
