Everton: Jarrad Branthwaite tipped to replace Raphael Varane at Man United with Old Trafford exit mooted
Jarrad Branthwaite leaving Everton for Manchester United “makes sense” and he could replace Raphael Varane at Old Trafford, Gabriel Agbonlahor has suggested.
The former Aston Villa striker believes the Toffees centre-back would be the ideal replacement for the World Cup winner Varane and potentially even Lisandro Martinez, who has missed much of the campaign through injury.
It has been reported, as per The Telegraph, that Man United are targeting Branthwaite and a striker ahead of the summer transfer window.
Speaking live via talkSPORT on Thursday (28 March, 6:30am), Agbonlahor said: “It just makes sense, doesn’t it? Spurs, Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool, they have their centre-halves sorted really.
“You look at Manchester United. Martinez – a lot of injuries this season. People aren’t sure of Maguire, but I think he does a good job.
“I think Branthwaite. He has the composure, the speed and the aggression. Varane will go as well. They aren’t going to give him a new contract. I think he fits in right in there.”
Could Everton lose Jarrad Branthwaite to Manchester United this summer?
Of course, all Evertonians will be hoping to keep their star centre-back this summer, despite all the interest from European giants floating about.
Especially considering the Toffees’ financial issues recently, having been punished for a breach in Profit and Sustainability rules, the price tags being mooted for Branthwaite could help alleviate some of that pressure.
However, if 777 Partners are able to complete the takeover at Goodison Park, money will not be so much of an issue, with the final factor being if Everton can remain in the Premier League this season.
The Toffees are fighting relegation for the third successive campaign, battling against the likes of Luton Town, Nottingham Forest and Brentford to stay safe in the top tier of English football.

Being exiled to the Championship would all but confirm Branthwaite’s exit from the club. And as Agbonlahor has highlighted, Man United would certainly benefit from a youngster of his calibre.
Only time will tell what will happen amid the Branthwaite saga at Everton. Until the summer transfer window closes ahead of the 2024/25 season, the 21-year-old’s future will remain uncertain.
In other Everton news, the Toffees have already made contact to sign two players in the summer transfer window.
