Everton: James Tarkowski makes ‘difficult’ Jordan Pickford admission at Goodison Park
James Tarkowski has admitted that Everton shot-stopper Jordan Pickford was a “difficult” player to get used to at Goodison Park.
The Toffees have created a formidable defensive set-up this season, with Tarkowki and Pickford teaming up with Jarrad Branthwaite to keep out opposition attacks.
Everton have conceded just 39 goals in 28 matches, a figure bettered only by Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City. However, it seems that the relationships at the back have not always been so smooth sailing.
Speaking via a feature on the club’s official website, ‘My Inbox’, Tarkowski said: “When I first started playing in front of him, realising how much information he needs to get across – every four seconds – it was difficult to take on board.
“But we’ve played a fair few games together now so we’ve learned to communicate well. He’s improved on his communication style and I’ve improved on my listening style. It’s quite a good partnership I’d say.”
Will Everton have the same defensive trio after the summer transfer window?
Despite the Toffees’ fine defensive record in the Premier League this campaign, the club are still facing the risk of relegation for the third successive season.
Just four points separate Everton from Nottingham Forest in the dropzone, with Luton Town one point better off than the Trees.
With Brentford and Crystal Palace also involved in the conversation, Everton have every chance of staying up. Sean Dyche’s side have been brilliant in defence, with scoring goals at the other end proving a much more noticeable issue.

Due to his exploits in the division this season, Branthwaite has been linked with an exit from Goodison Park this summer, with Manchester United the latest European giant interested.
Of course, Evertonians will hope that the young prospect stays at the club. But, considering the club’s current financial issues, and the significant price tag hanging over Branthwaite’s head, the defensive trio may be split up ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
In other Everton news, Jeff Stelling has mooted a £45million exit for one Toffees star.
