Newcastle United vs Everton: Anthony Gordon shares ‘ridiculous’ verdict after what happened
Newcastle United attacker Anthony Gordon slammed the “ridiculous” red card he was given that means he will miss a reunion with Everton.
Gordon was sent off late on in Saturday’s (30 March) thrilling 4-3 win over West Ham at St James’ Park after picking up a second yellow card.
The 23-year-old’s dismissal came as a result of kicking the ball away, which referee Rob Jones considered an act of time-wasting.
However, asked about the decision, Gordon is quoted by The Mirror [1 April] as saying: “I tapped the ball away.
“How far you want to look into that… it’s incredible really. To get sent off for tapping a ball five yards.
“To be honest with you, I only think he booked me because he didn’t know he’d booked me before. That’s not good enough to be honest with you.
“I don’t want to complain about referees because they have a job to do. They are the rules so he’s sticking to the rules and laws of the game but it’s ridiculous really.”
Anthony Gordon ruled out for Newcastle v Everton
Gordon would no doubt have loved to have featured against Everton, but it was not to be on this occasion.
The decision did seem harsh at the time, but the referee was ultimately sticking to the rules of the law.
It was a game in which plenty of players had hot heads given the topsy-turvy nature of it, and that told in the closing stages.

The circumstances of his Goodison Park exit aside, Gordon has done well to turn things around at Newcastle in his first full season at the club.
The England international has nine goals and six assists in 28 Premier League appearances, so he will clearly be missed by United.
That is therefore good news for the Toffees, and hopefully it is something that can be profited from at St James’ Park on Tuesday (2 April) after the disappointing loss at Bournemouth.
