Dermot Gallagher reacts live on Sky Sports to Everton controversy in loss v Bournemouth

Dermot Gallagher believes Everton should have been awarded a penalty for a foul on Dominic Calvert-Lewin against Bournemouth on Saturday (30 March).

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch on Monday (1 April, 11:40am), the former Premier League referee said there would have been “no complaints” from the Cherries if a spot kick had been awarded after the England international appeared to have been fouled by Tyler Adams.

But he believes the referee didn’t give a penalty because he mistakenly thought the 27-year-old forward had tripped himself, with the Toffees eventually losing the game 2-1.

“I think if the referee gives a penalty, there can’t be too many complaints,” said Gallagher. “When you see the next angle, I think this is the referee’s view and if you watch Calvert-Lewin, I think the referee thinks he trips himself because he puts his legs together, but he does get kicked first.”

Everton unfortunate to not be handed penalty against Bournemouth

It just isn’t going Everton’s way on the pitch at this moment in time as there is no doubt that they should have been awarded a penalty.

While the referee may have thought Calvert-Lewin had tripped himself, it’s inexcusable for VAR to not pick up on the issue and at least send him to the monitor for a second look.

There have been several incidents of this nature that have gone against the Toffees so far this season and Sean Dyche will no doubt be getting tired of it.

But they can’t afford to get themselves down about it as the defeat means they have now gone 12 games without a win in the Premier League.

The Blues boss will be looking to ensure that run comes to an immediate end when he takes his side to St James’ Park to face Newcastle United on Tuesday (2 April).
