Everton: Simon Thomas reacts instantly with one word as Dominic Calvert-Lewin scores v Newcastle United

Dominic Calvert-Lewin ended a 23-match goalless run as Everton earned a brilliant point away at Newcastle United on Tuesday night.

Aleksandar Isak’s 15th-minute goal was cancelled out late on by Calvert-Lewin when the Everton striker scored from the spot following a Paul Dummett foul on Ashley Young.

Sky Sports News host Simon Thomas reacted instantly to the goal that was commented on by Sue Smith as it hit the back of Martin Dubravka’s net.

“This is a massive moment for Dominic Calvert-Lewin. He’s not scored in 23 games,” said Smith on Sky Sports News on Tuesday night (2 April, 09:15pm).

“It’s a massive opportunity for him. The last penalty [Everton had], Beto took it and he missed.

“Dubravka is just trying to put him off and this is a huge moment. He’s done well since he came on, he’s really made a difference for Everton.

“Calvert-Lewin, a couple of deep breaths. He steps up – and he scores!”

Thomas’ instant one-word reaction to the goal was: “Emphatic.”

Will Everton avoid Premier League relegation?

It was a brilliant way to win a point against one of the Premier League’s better teams.

Sure, it wasn’t a win for the Blues but a point away at Newcastle after being behind for a lot of the game and at one point thinking it was two goals down? That’s not bad at all.

Sean Dyche has a lot to work on, obviously.

There’s still a worrying lack of goals up front but Calvert-Lewin’s strike from the spot will hopefully inspire some confidence in the goalshy striker.

If the defence can keep performing well and keep out as many goals as possible and the midfielders keep on creating, the Toffees should be able to stay up if Calvert-Lewin and Beto can keep on getting among the goals.

There are some big games to come for the Toffees, who don’t really know what kind of position they’re in with a second points deduction on the cards for financial breaches.

It’s Everton versus Burnley at Goodison Park this weekend.

All eyes should be on that colossal fixture.
