Everton: Neville Southall rants at Goodison Park board after draw v Newcastle
Neville Southall has taken aim at the Everton board after watching the 1-1 draw against Newcastle at St James’ Park on Tuesday 2 April.
The ex-Toffees goalkeeper has insisted that the club have been sleepwalking into mediocrity for the past 10 years, with Sean Dyche not to blame for the events at Goodison Park over recent years.
The draw at St. James’ Park produced an unwanted club record for the Toffees – who have now gone 13 Premier League games without victory for the first time.
Posting on X, Southall said: “I really don’t blame the manager staff or players. This situation they find themselves in goes back 10 years. When they said top 10 was ok. No ambition. We were sleep walking into mediocrity. Whatever happens now is down to the chairman and owners we have had.”
Farhad Moshiri to blame for Everton demise?
It’s hard to argue that the Toffees got lucky in their 1-1 draw with Newcastle, as VAR intervened with replays that showed Ashley Young being fouled by Paul Dummett in the box, leading to Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s 12-yard equaliser.
Despite not winning for a record 13 straight games in the Premier League, Everton’s precarious monetary situation remains their most pressing issue.
Dyche’s side would be sat in 14th, 10 points clear of the bottom three, had financial breaches not seen them given a six-point deduction (reduced from 10) earlier this season.

As Southall says, the club’s current state has been over a decade in the making. With many a costly failure in the transfer market, a revolving door of managers, and the costs of building a new stadium, it’s increasingly hard to see how Everton can claw their way out of this rut.
In other Everton news, football finance expert Kieran Maguire believes another points deduction is ‘inevitable’ after the club released their latest accounts.
