Everton: Jamie Carragher warns Liverpool of ‘Grave Mistake’ ahead of Merseyside derby
Jamie Carragher has warned Liverpool about making a “grave mistake” by underestimating Everton in the Merseyside derby later this month.
The Reds are going for a second Premier League title in Jurgen Klopp’s final season but still have to face Manchester United at Old Trafford and the Toffees at Goodison Park before the campaign is over.
And despite both teams struggling for form this season, Carragher has written in his Telegraph column (5 April) that his former side can’t go into the game believing it will be easy or it could see their title hopes taken out of their hands.
“Before both games against [Manchester] United this season – the first was a 0-0 draw at Anfield – I cannot help but feel even some Liverpool fans fell into the trap of believing they would only have to beat an inconsistent and inferior United team rather than worry about the history and tradition of the match,” he wrote.
“The same might apply when Liverpool go to Goodison later this month. That would be a grave mistake.
“Since Klopp has been in England, Everton have been generally dreadful, but they have still been able to take points from Liverpool.”
Goodison Park will be rocking for Everton v Liverpool
While all the attention in the city seems to be about Liverpool chasing the title, it seems to have been forgotten that Everton will be fighting for their lives in that game too.
As it stands the club are just four points above the relegation zone but a second points deduction is expected for PSR breaches after a six-point deduction earlier in the season, which could plummet them into the drop zone.
But aside from that this is an Everton team who are currently winless in their last 13 games, which means confidence is low and the fans are needed to get behind the players and pick them up.

With such high stakes you know that the ground will be absolutely rocking under the lights and the players will be up for it.
Liverpool at their best will be expected to win the game easily but with the Toffees fans making their presence felt and the squad playing to the best of their abilities then anything can happen.
