Everton: 3/10 James Tarkowski stinks out Goodison Park, 8/10 shines – Player ratings v Burnley

Everton secured a crucial three points at Goodison Park as they beat Burnley 1-0 thanks to a goal from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and a mistake from Arijanet Muric.

The first half saw Calvert-Lewin’s pressure on the Burnley goalkeeper pay off as his attempted pass deflected off the striker’s outstretched leg and bounced into the net shortly before half-time.

In the second half, Sean Dyche’s team were able to stay solid at the back against the ten men of Burnley after Dara O’Shea was sent off to secure a vital win at home.

Everton player ratings v Burnley

Goodison News has rated each Everton player out of ten below…

Jordan Pickford – 6

Burnley mustered just one shot on target in the game which was comfortably dealt with by the goalkeeper who was something of a spectator for large spells. Didn’t have much to do, but did everything with his usual confidence.

Seamus Coleman – 6

The captain was a solid and stable presence at the back as he marshalled the defence perfectly to keep another clean sheet at Goodison at a time when they needed him most. An unspectacular performance, but certainly an important one.

James Tarkowski – 4

Tarkowaki was a shadow of his usual self as he looked shaky and nervous throughout despite keeping his opponents out for an important clean sheet, finding himself booked.

He was inconsistent in possession and struggled to win his duels but did play his part in the victory despite the overall underwhelming display.

Jarrad Branthwaite – 8

By far the better of the two centre-backs as he continues to prove why he is so highly coveted by some of Europe’s top clubs. His front-footed style allowed Everton to defend with aggression and ensure nothing silly was allowed to happen.

Vitaliy Mykolenko – 7

Wasn’t quite as involved in possession as he would have liked to be, but defensively he was one of the standouts for Dyche’s team. Had the better of his opponent throughout and dominated the game at the back.

James Garner – 6

Everton’s lack of possession limited his game hugely as he wasn’t able to get a hold of the ball and dictate the speed of play, but did play an important role defensively to sweep up in what first appeared a light-weight midfield.

Andre Gomes – 5

Similar to his teammate, Gomes was unable to see as much of the ball as he would ideally like, but his creativity and passing range were still on display as the more advanced of the two midfielders.

Abdoulaye Doucoure – 7

Another impressive display from Doucoure who provided a threat throughout thanks to his late runs forward and connection with Calvert-Lewin, winning the majority of his duels, although his passing could have been better to help the team in possession.

Ashley Young – 7

Somewhat of a creative masterclass from the winger in a game which lacked any real quality. Three key passes and five crosses showed what he was selected for as Dyche looked to bring more of a physical game to their opponents.

Dwight McNeil – 6

Similar to Young, McNeil’s crossing allowed Everton to pile more pressure physically on the Burnley back line, looking to use their height to their advantage as he found a step up from his recent disappointing performances.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 8

This was the opposite of his previous performances – in all the best ways. His link-up play was sorely lacking as he hardly saw much of the ball, but the striker posed a constant threat in front of goal.

The eventual winner, despite the luck involved, was his goal, while he tested Muric on several other occasions as he looked to finally have his confidence back.

Subs

Jack Harrison – 6

Beto – 6
