Everton: Southall says clubs will buy their way out as Premier League fine development emerges

Neville Southall believes the Daily Mail’s report of the Premier League’s proposed new system of fining clubs for breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) is not fair on Everton, who have had points deducted.

Furthermore, the legendary Toffees goalkeeper believes that certain clubs will simply be able to “buy their way out” of trouble.

Everton, meanwhile, have been deducted a total of eight points this season – though their second sanction of two points is subject to appeal.

Southall wrote on his personal X account: “Everton will have points taken off them this season [sic].

“Next season, points deductions will be replaced by fines I think and [I] guess certain so-called big clubs [will] be able to buy [their] way out.”

Everton can now focus on Premier League survival

The announcement of the Toffees’ second sanction – a two-point deduction – has, if nothing else, given Sean Dyche’s men clarity regarding what it will take to keep themselves in the Premier League.

Everton have dropped one place to 16th but remain two points clear of the drop zone as well as boasting a game in hand on Brentford above them and each of the three teams below.

Their upcoming trip to London to face Chelsea is followed by three consecutive home matches at Goodison Park against Nottingham Forest, rivals Liverpool and Brentford, with Luton Town, Sheffield United and Arsenal to come in May.

That fixture list offers plenty of opportunities for Dyche and his side to pick up crucial points off their relegation rivals – and they will hope their 1-0 win over 10-man Burnley, which ended their 13-game winless streak – can act as a springboard for a run of form good enough to secure survival.
