Everton handed Amadou Onana transfer boost as Fabrizio Romano shares Joelinton update

Everton will be hoping to keep Amadou Onana at Goodison Park this summer amid links with a transfer away from Merseyside.

The 22-year-old has emerged as one the biggest midfield prospects in the Premier League, having signed for the Toffees on a £33million deal from Lille in the summer of 2022. [BBC Sport]

Onana has made 66 appearances in Everton colours since, prompting clubs across Europe to sit up and take notice of the young Belgian, with Newcastle United said to be interested.

According to HITC [20 January], the Magpies had already begun preparing for the exit of Joelinton during the January transfer window, targeting Everton’s Onana as a potential replacement.

However, according to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle have managed to agree personal terms with the Brazilian over a new four-year deal, having been closing in on a St James’ Park exit this summer as a free agent.

Though Joelinton has yet to return from a serious long-term injury, which he sustained in January, he could play a vital role in the club’s 2024/25 season and will lessen the need for a new midfielder.

Everton handed Amadou Onana transfer boost amid Joelinton update

Though Everton are likely to have several other candidates come knocking for their star midfielder’s signature at the end of the season, the Joelinton news will come as a huge relief.

Considering Idrissa Gana Gueye’s injury record this season, the Toffees cannot afford to lose Onana, even if a considerable bid comes in for the midfielder.

The 22-year-old still has plenty of room to develop and improve, making him an extremely exciting prospect at Goodison Park, one that can certainly benefit under the guidance of Sean Dyche.

Despite impressing throughout the last two seasons, Onana has only notched four goals and three assists. Many might see him as a defensive midfielder, but he has the ability to be a box-to-box midfielder, but only if his goal contributions begin to improve.

For such a young talent, Everton must do everything in their power to keep him at the club this summer. Joelinton’s new contract just gives them perhaps a glimmer of hope they can do just that.
