Everton: Phil McNulty raves about ‘outstanding’ Jordan Pickford amid Goodison criticism

Phil McNulty believes Jordan Pickford doesn’t get anywhere near the respect and credit he deserves following his performances for Everton.

Answering questions in his Q&A on the BBC Sport website on Wednesday (10 April), the journalist completely disagreed with a Toffees fan’s claim that other fans have bigged up the 30-year-old and his teammate Dominic Calvert-Lewin to trick the club into keeping them in recent years.

He said no opposition fans have been bigging up either player despite the fact the England keeper has been “outstanding” and has pretty much prevented the Blues from being relegated to the Championship.

“Not sure opposition fans have been ‘bigging up’ either,” said McNulty. “I do not think Jordan Pickford gets anywhere near the respect and credit he deserves outside Everton and England.

“He has been outstanding and yet no one beyond those two spheres appears to realise just how good he has been. Pickford is England’s best keeper by a country mile.

“If Everton have been tricked into holding on to Pickford (which they have not) it has worked well for them because he has pretty much kept them out of the Championship.”

Jordan Pickford has been impressive again for Everton

It seems incredibly unfair to question Pickford’s position at Everton given some of the performances he’s put in for the club over the past few years.

There is a very good chance they wouldn’t be playing in the Premier League anymore if it wasn’t for some of the fine saves he’s made in the last few campaigns.

While the keeper has made the odd mistake here and there, he has undoubtedly made up for it and that is why he continues to be the number one for England as well.

There is plenty wrong with the Toffees at this moment in time, but having a keeper of Pickford’s quality in between the sticks is certainly not one of them.

He will no doubt be instrumental in the final few weeks of the season if the Blues manage to fight off relegation again at Goodison Park.

In other Everton news, Pat Nevin has raged over a Toffees development as he shared a “ludicrous” Premier League admission.
