Everton: Ashley Young teases Nottingham Forest with cheeky message after VAR controversies

Ashley Young has sent a cheeky message via social media after he was involved in several contentious decisions during Everton against Nottingham Forest on Sunday (21 April).

The veteran was at the centre of proceedings as the Toffees claimed a 2-0 win at Goodison Park, though many feel he was lucky to leave the pitch without conceding at least one penalty.

Due to the magnitude of the game, emotions were running high, with Forest hitting out at the PGMOL over the controversial decisions and suggesting that Stuart Attwell’s allegiance to Luton Town swayed his decision-making as VAR.

Taking to X on Monday (22 April), Young posted a screenshot of Justin Timberlake’s ‘Cry Me A River’, with the caption: “Old Skool Tunes For Today” with two winking emojis.

Ashley Young must be ready for social media abuse after Everton v Nottingham Forest

The 38-year-old has seen plenty of drama in his time and will have experienced his fair share of abuse from rival fans, though even this situation must be new to him.

Young, and the Toffees, will be counting their lucky stars that Attwell decided against handing Forest at least one penalty, while it could have been more.

While his challenge on Gio Reyna is the easiest decision to call, his handball and challenge from behind on Callum Hudson-Odoi were potentially more clear-cut penalty shouts, though referee Anthony Taylor was never asked to go to the pitchside monitor.

Forest have every right to feel aggrieved, but the manner of their reaction to the decisions is not a professional one, and will likely be punished in due course.

Of course, Young being the professional he is, has decided to taunt the opposition fans with a cheeky message on X. If, and only if, Everton do manage to survive, will this not come back to haunt him.

However, the vital three points at Goodison Park on Sunday have taken Sean Dyche’s side one step closer to Premier League safety.

In other Everton news, a senior player may never start for the club again after the Chelsea loss and is now very likely to leave in June.
