Anthony Gordon comments on The Overlap sure to leave Everton fans fuming

Anthony Gordon has stoked tension between himself and the Everton supporters again after his most recent comments.

Gordon, an Everton youth graduate, left Goodison Park for Newcastle United in a £45m transfer in January 2023 (Sky Sports), going on to play Champions League football and compete for European football again with the Magpies this season.

While Everton linger near the bottom of the Premier League standings again and struggling for goals on a regular basis, Gordon has contributed to 19 for Newcastle this season, a hugely higher tally than he managed in any of his seasons with the Toffees.

Speaking on The Overlap with Gary Neville, comments made by the 23-year-old are likely to rile up Evertonians again after the bitter circumstances that surrounded his exit from the club.

Talking about his career prospects, Gordon told Neville: “I’ve got one goal and purpose, to be at the very top of football. Nothing will get in the way of that.

“My ambition is to be at the top, and I couldn’t do that where I was [at Everton].

“[The departure] didn’t have to be like that, I just wanted to fulfil my ambitions, and Everton needed to sell me, but ultimately, I got what I wanted, I joined Newcastle”.

How will Anthony Gordon’s comment go down with Everton fans?

While Gordon’s statement is technically true given Everton’s current plight, it is sure to antagonise a fanbase already frustrated by their club’s underachievements, and at the player himself for the manner in which he left the club.

Gordon was perceived by many as jumping ship at the first possible opportunity when the going got tough, as Everton were in the bottom three when he opted to join the Magpies.

When Amadou Onana publicly stated his willingness to remain at the club in the face of adversity during the same transfer window, that only worsened the image of Gordon to Everton fans.

Performances on the field also contributed to that, though, as Gordon scored just three goals in 17 matches during the first half of the 2022-23 season before moving on.

Gordon was keen to stress in the interview that Everton needed to sell him due to their financial difficulties, and that it was not his intention for things to pan out the way they did, but he made it abruptly clear he was happy to leave Goodison Park.
