Gary Neville slams Everton fans at Goodison Park after incident v Liverpool

Gary Neville was left baffled by Everton fans for their reaction as a penalty was chalked off by VAR v Liverpool as Dominic Calvert-Lewin was offside in the buildup.

The opening exchanges of the Merseyside Derby were reminiscent of a basketball game as both sides created chances.

The Toffees thought they had a penalty when Calvert-Lewin was wiped out by Alisson but on closer inspection, the Englishman was offside before he was brought down in the box.

After the decision was reversed, the VAR announcement was met with audible boos and discontent from the Goodison faithful.

Speaking on Sky Sports Main Event (24 April, 08:09 pm), Neville was left bemused by the reaction.

He said: “There are a lot of boos around the stadium but I’m not sure what they’re for.

“There’s a lack of communication to fans in the stadium who can’t see that’s just a clear-cut offside. They’re booing the Everton fans but if only they could see the shot we can see here.”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin offside for Everton v Liverpool

It has been a very positive half for the Toffees in the Merseyside Derby which sees them 1-0 up against their most bitter rivals.

A scrappy goal but a goal nonetheless which sent the Gwladys Street End into raptures midway through the first half.

It had been on its feet earlier in the game after Calvert-Lewin was hauled down by Alisson inside the penalty area. The referee awarded a penalty but it was eventually cancelled.

The negative reaction which met the decision is reflective of a stadium which couldn’t see the replays and freezeframes. They felt they were being held up by VAR once again.

Upon first viewing after the game, they will realise that it was a clear decision to make but the moment sums up the issue.

The Toffees used this to rile up their players and it clearly worked as Jarrad Branthwaite got on the scoresheet 20 minutes later.

An excellent moment and a positive lead which Sean Dyche’s side carried into the half-time interval.

In other Everton news, Jarrad Branthwaite’s value has plummeted by £30million after a new Goodison Park development.
