Jamie Carragher loses it with Darwin Nunez after ‘unforgiveable’ Liverpool incident v Everton
Jamie Carragher has slammed Darwin Nunez after he missed a golden chance as Everton won 2-0 against Liverpool on Wednesday (24 April).
It has been 14 years in the making but the Toffees have a win in the Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park.
Thanks to goals from Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Sean Dyche’s side took all three points to all but solidify their spot in the Premier League next season.
Speaking on Sky Sports Main Event, shared on X, Carragher blamed Nunez for the defeat after missing a clear-cut opportunity in the first half.
He said: “The chance that Nunez misses before half time that’s unforgivable at this level these lads [Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge] know about that, but that’s not acceptable at this level especially with Liverpool going for a title.”
How did Everton win v Liverpool?
It was a tidy performance from the Toffees who managed to frustrate the Reds throughout the derby day clash.
According to FotMob, the away side registered a hefty 77 per cent possession and translated that into 23 shots with seven on target. Despite having 2.06 xG, they couldn’t get past Jordan Pickford.
On the flip side, Everton took their chances when they came. They still managed 16 shots and six on-target which came out at 1.09 xG.
They outperformed their expected goals but it was what they deserved especially after a well-worked corner as Calvert-Lewin scored.
As Carragher pointed out, the Liverpool forward line certainly made it easier for the home side as he missed a big chance.
He had one shot saved well by Pickford while having one blocked. Given that Klopp’s men had 23 shots he should have had more than just two.
Making the most of set pieces and the electric atmosphere was Dyche’s game plan and it worked superbly.
