Sean Dyche reveals Goodison Park fact he is regularly reminded of ahead of Everton v Liverpool

Sean Dyche has revealed the fact he is regularly reminded of about the Merseyside derby ahead of the Everton v Liverpool clash at Goodison Park on Wednesday (24 April).

The reverse fixture at Anfield this season saw a Mohamed Salah brace condemn the Toffees to a 2-0 defeat, but Dyche’s team will be hoping to take one step closer to Premier League safety against their rivals.

Though the match was shrouded in controversy, goals from Idrissa Gueye and Dwight McNeil helped Everton seal an all-important 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday 21 April.

When reminded that Everton have not won a Merseyside derby at Goodison in 14 years, Dyche replied, in quotes reported by the Daily Mirror’s print edition (24 April, page 57): “Since I’ve been here, I’ve been reminded of that a few times.

“It’s a challenge, but it’s a good challenge to have. We’ve just come off an important result. We’re back at Goodison and the fans are in good voice, it’s a great opportunity again to take it on.”

Can Everton pip Liverpool in the Merseyside derby?

The Toffees will need to forget the controversy from their battle against Forest on Sunday and focus on the positives from the game as they aim to put a dent in the title aspirations of rivals Liverpool.

Evertonians are likely to play a major role in getting any points against their rivals, having beaten Liverpool just once since 2011 – a 2-0 win at Anfield in 2021.

A victory against the title-chasing Reds would mark Dyche’s first time grabbing consecutive wins since December when Everton went on a four-game unbeaten streak in the league.

The 6-0 loss to Chelsea showcased the weaknesses that the side still possess ahead of the Merseyside derby, but the occasion at Goodison will give the players the platform to show what they are made of.

Though the win over Forest took the club five points clear of the dropzone, Everton are still very much involved in the relegation battle this season and will keen to take one step closer to safety.

Of course, hindering their rival’s charge for the Premier League title would also be a sweet result.
