Jamie Carragher in shock as he gushes over Everton star James Tarkowski, ‘best in the league’

Jamie Carragher has hailed James Tarkowski for his impact from set pieces for Everton as they scored two against Liverpool on Wednesday (24 April).

The Toffees secured their first Merseyside Derby win at Goodison Park since 2010 thanks to goals by Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Liverpool couldn’t deal with the aerial threat of Sean Dyche’s side as both of their goals came in and around set pieces.

Speaking on Sky Sports Premier League, shared on X, Carragher has praised Tarkowski for his impact on the match-winning moments.

He said: “From set pieces, Tarkowski for me is the best in the league. Everton looked like scoring from every set piece.”

How did James Tarkowski perform v Everton?

The whole Everton backline was on top form as they kept Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah quiet throughout.

Branthwaite got on the scoresheet as his scuffed effort squirmed under Alisson and barely made it over the line.

His partner in crime, Tarkowski was picked out by former England centre-back Carragher who was full of praise for him.

It wasn’t a day for Dyche’s men to play with the ball on the floor and they made the most of making it a physical game. This still saw the defender register an 82 per cent pass accuracy throughout [FotMob].

On the defensive side of the game, he was superb. 19 defensive actions across the 90 minutes sums up his performance.

He had a 100 per cent tackle success across his three tackles. Adding to this he made nine clearances, five interceptions and four recoveries throughout.

Tarkowski and Branthwaite have formed a great partnership and the Merseyside derby win was representative of that.
