Peter Reid shares four-word verdict on Everton win as they finally beat Liverpool

Peter Reid has taken to social media to share a four-word verdict after Everton claimed a 2-0 Merseyside derby victory over Liverpool at Goodison Park on 24 April.

Goals from Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin in either half secured the Toffees’ first derby win on home soil since 2010.

The result not only puts Sean Dyche’s men in a strong position to secure safety but also significantly dents the Reds’ title hopes.

Reid, 67, posted on his personal X account in the aftermath of the victory: “What a lovely evening.”

Everton can breathe a little easier

Everton’s Merseyside derby win over Liverpool is made even sweeter for Toffees fans due to the effect it has had on both teams’ seasons.

Dyche’s side now sit a full eight points clear of the relegation zone despite being docked eight points for two breaches of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Of their remaining four games, the next three include home clashes with 15th-placed Brentford and bottom-of-the-league Sheffield United either side of a trip to 18th-placed Luton Town.

As a result, mathematical safety for Everton feels as though it is in sight – and the likelihood of the Toffees needing to get a result at the Emirates Stadium against title-chasing Arsenal on the final day now appears remote.

Furthermore, the Toffees’ derby win has seen rivals Liverpool remain three points behind Arsenal, while Manchester City lurk just one point behind the Reds but with two games in hand.

Taking a big step towards safety and making a big dent in their rivals’ title hopes was just the kind of positive result Everton needed in a season that has held far too little joy up to this point.

In other Everton news, a Toffees shareholder was left raging over an “utterly ridiculous” incident against Liverpool.
