Stan Collymore slams Everton ‘circus’ in instant reaction to win v Liverpool at Goodison
Stan Collymore has slammed the “off-field circus” surrounding Everton following their 2-0 Merseyside derby victory over Liverpool.
Everton claimed a shock win over their rivals at Goodison Park with goals in either half from Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, while also seeing a penalty overturned by VAR.
The Toffees now have an eight-point cushion between themselves and the relegation zone, despite remaining 16th in the Premier League table.
Collymore posted on X: “Delighted for Dyche, Steve Stone and Ian Woan. Under major pressure a couple of weeks ago, now 1 loss in 4 including 3 wins.
“Won’t win many style awards but with the off-field circus still ongoing at Goodison, keeping them up really will be a very solid achievement.”
Sudden upturn in form may have saved Everton and Sean Dyche
Things were looking bleak for Everton when they endured their 13th Premier League game in a row without winning – a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United at St James’ Park – setting an unwanted club record in the process.
A 1-0 win over fellow relegation strugglers Burnley ended that negative streak, but the 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Chelsea that followed sparked fresh doubt over the Toffees’ survival credentials.
However, they appear to have turned a corner since that humbling defeat, claiming successive 2-0 wins over relegation rivals – and fellow recipients of a points deduction – Nottingham Forest and city rivals Liverpool.
Not only do those results put Everton within touching distance of safety with four games remaining, but they may have also transformed the narrative surrounding the job Dyche has done at Goodison Park.
Helping Everton retain their unbroken Premier League status despite a whirlwind of off-field issues – including a messy takeover and two breaches of the competition’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) that have led to a total of eight points being docket from the Toffees total – is no mean feat.
In other Everton news, a senior player may never start for the club again after the Chelsea loss and is now very likely to leave in June.
