Jamie Carragher gushes over ‘fantastic’ Idrissa Gueye at Everton amid contract verdict

Jamie Carragher has joined the “clamour” from Everton fans for Idrissa Gueye to sign a new deal as he gushed over the midfielder’s performances at Goodison Park this season.

The former Liverpool defender explained that, with Gueye’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, the fans would like him to extend his stay on Merseyside.

Gueye went on to score the matchwinner in the 1-0 victory against Brentford, adding to his strike against Nottingham Forest only last week as the Toffees survived.

Speaking live on Sky Sports Main Event [27 April, 17:29], Carragher shared: “I think his contract is up at the end of the season and there’s a clamour from the fans for him to stay.

“He’s been fantastic in front of the defence and is one of the big reasons why Everton have had such a good defensive record this season.”

Carragher’s praise for Gueye will be matched by plenty of the fans at Everton, particularly after his recent performances, with a decision still to be made on the long-term future of the Senegalese international at Goodison Park.

The holding midfielder has been one of the most consistent performers at the club this season in screening the back-four despite occasional criticism of his ability on the ball to help build attacks out from the back.

His absence was felt while he was away for the Africa Cup of Nations over the winter and his midfield place was lost to the pairing of James Garner and Amadou Onana, but recent displays have made him a key part of the side once more.

Given the financial situation the Toffees have found themselves in this season, difficult decisions will have to be made over the long-term future of several first-team players, but Gueye is one that most at the club would like to stay.
