Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin receives Simon Jordan dig live on talkSPORT

Simon Jordan and Danny Murphy have aimed a new dig at Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin live on talkSPORT amid praise for Carlo Ancelotti after Bayern Munich v Real Madrid.

The pair were discussing the career of Ancelotti as Murphy commented on how he was the only boss so far to get the best out of the number nine at Goodison Park.

Jordan followed up by insisting that the goal return mentioned was “before handbags”, hinting that the striker’s fashion sense has had an impact on his performances on the pitch.

Speaking live on talkSPORT [1 May, 10:42], Murphy explained: “He got the best out of Calvert-Lewin, it was the only season Calvert-Lewin actually banged in a load of goals,” before Jordan aimed his dig: “Before handbags,” and Murphy chuckled: “Before the handbags, yeah.”

Calvert-Lewin has featured prominently in fashion magazines such as British GQ, often dressed eccentrically which has led to Jordan’s latest dig at the forward.

This has, at times, encouraged fans to suggest that he is more focused on off-field matters than he is on the pitch, with a patchy injury record and poor conversion rate in front of goal in recent years opening up the chance for criticism.

That criticism has been loud again this season after the striker went through a rough patch in front of goal and looked as if he would never find the net again before a penalty against Newcastle saw him rediscover his scoring touch.

Digs like these made by Jordan live on the radio are needless when you consider the conversations surrounding how players are affected by comments made – as Calvert-Lewin himself explained in an interview with the Evening Standard [November 2023].

While it was nothing overly serious, the suggestion fashion gets in the way of his performances is ridiculous.
