Everton interest in Emiliano Martinez confirmed by agent, move could be on after Copa America

Everton are interested in FC Midtjylland gem Emiliano Martinez ahead of the summer transfer window, the player’s agent has confirmed.

According to Mauricio Machado, Martinez’s agent, the 24-year-old is set to leave Denmark in June as he meets up with the Uruguay national team ahead of the 2024 Copa America.

The Toffees are said to have registered an interest in the player before and have doubled down on their transfer target as they appear to want to sign him during the summer transfer window.

Speaking to Sport 890 on Wednesday (8 May), Machado revealed: “Everton in England was interested in Emiliano Martinez a while ago and now they are interested again. He could be a good option for the middle of the year. Let’s analyse it.”

Could Everton sign Emiliano Martinez this summer?

Sean Dyche’s midfield is certainly an area that could be strengthened ahead of the 2024-25 campaign, with Idrissa Gueye, James Garner and Amadou Onana currently making up the selections.

While all three options have been excellent at times this season, also with Abdoulaye Doucoure playing further forward, injuries have been a major issue with little backup on the bench.

There is also the small matter of Onana’s transfer rumours flying around Goodison Park, with his decent form and young age prompting many European clubs to take notice.

Everton could be under pressure to sell, despite securing Premier League safety, as monetary worries continue to linger for the Merseyside club.

The Toffees have already been punished twice this season for Profit and Sustainability breaches, which could suggest that the club need to offload a couple of players before bringing in a talent like Martinez.

With over 100 senior appearances across Midtjylland, Club Nacional and Red Bull Bragatino, Everton could be on the verge of an unknown talent. However, his lack of top-level European experience could be a risk.

In other Everton news, two big-money Toffees players are now “almost certain” to depart Goodison Park.
