Sean Dyche makes selection blunder in Everton v Sheffield United clash

Sean Dyche has made the mistake of playing Abdoulaye Doucoure instead of Andre Gomes as Everton take on Sheffield United.

The Toffees play host to the Blades on 11 May at Goodison Park and have virtually nothing to play for.

The same can be said about Chris Wilder’s side as well as they’ve already been relegated to the Championship.

Andre Gomes should’ve started for Everton

Dyche has opted for safety first this season and that is an approach that’s worked but the players would surely want to express themselves a little.

Gomes is arguably the most technical player for the Toffees and would’ve enjoyed playing with the pressure off.

Doucoure, who has struggled recently, could’ve done with being dropped and Dyche would also have sent a message to him.

The 31-year-old Mali international’s ball retention in recent games has been disappointing, to say the least, and not having Gomes in the side could cost Dyche.

Everton must be more expansive today v Sheffield United

The Toffees can adopt an expansive style of play against Sheffield United, as they have secured their Premier League safety and have nothing to lose in this match.

This approach involves taking more risks in their attacking movements, playing a high pressing game, and focusing on ball possession.

In their expansive style, they should look to dominate possession, using short, quick passes to control the game’s tempo.

This will allow them to dictate the pace of the match and create more opportunities for their attacking players.

They can also use the full width of the pitch, stretching Sheffield United’s defence and creating space for their midfielders and forwards to exploit.
