Ex Everton striker Wayne Rooney issues Liverpool verdict ahead of Manchester United transfer
Former Everton striker Wayne Rooney believes that he had to join Manchester United partly due to his dislike of Liverpool.
The ex Derby County manager reveals that he grew up watching United and as a Toffees fan, the only way he could have a go at Liverpool was by seeing United beating them.
Thus, when he found out about the Old Trafford outfit’s interest, he decided that he was going to join them.
Speaking on Stick to Football at 56:52 (15 May) “I was growing up in the 90s watching Manchester United. In all what I was seeing and obviously being an Everton fan we weren’t really going to win anything so my best way of having a go with Liverpool fans was Man United win. I grew up watching him then the minute I knew Manchester United were interested in me, I was like that’s the only place I’m going.”
Everton fans did not get to experience Wayne Rooney at his best
Fans would have undoubtedly wanted Rooney, a local talent and boyhood Evertonian, to stay with the club for a longer period.
The striker’s decision to leave for Manchester United was a bitter pill to swallow but one that most people understood.
However, Rooney’s reasoning for joining United was not just about furthering his own career but it was also driven by a desire to see Liverpool lose.
Rooney’s move to Manchester United in 2004 meant that he would play a significant role in one of the most successful periods in United’s history, which included numerous victories over Liverpool.
This would have been a source of immense satisfaction for Rooney, as it allowed him to contribute to Liverpool’s misery directly.
For Toffees fans, seeing their former player excel against their arch-rivals would have provided some solace and a sense of pride.
While the pain of losing such a talented player to a rival club would have been hard to overcome, the enjoyment Everton fans derived from Rooney’s performances against Liverpool likely softened the blow.
