Everton face going back to square one if 777 Partners takeover approved

The Premier League would “almost certainly” insist on re-evaluating 777 Partners’ attempted takeover of Everton even if the Miami-based firm were to produce the funds required to gain approval, according to the Liverpool Echo.

It would effectively mean the Toffees going back to square one as they await the Premier League to approve the takeover – one in which no supporter even wants.

The report on 16 May has revealed that the investment company have had a number of assets seized by a Belgian court, including their control of Belgian Pro League side Standard Liege.

This came as a result of 777 failing to pay the second instalment of the fee owed for purchasing the team in 2022, as well as failing to pay the wages of the club’s playing staff.

A glimpse into what Everton could look like under 777 Partners’ control

Standard Liege are a storied Belgian club, having won the top flight 10 times and the Belgian Cup eight times, as well as having remained in the country’s top division for over 100 years.

Yet they face the ignominy of players not being paid and owners not paying the club what they owe.

Everton boast a similarly proud history – but they would not be immune to mistreatment and mismanagement from 777.

There are other stories of the consequences of 777’s negligence – the Miami-based firm are at risk of losing control of their Brazilian football club, Vasco da Gama, while their budget airline business Bonza has been forced to go into administration.

These stories are – scarcely believably – actually worse than the circumstances in which Everton presently find themselves.

In much the same way as the entire takeover process could be rebooted even if the investment firm produce the required funds – which there are no signs of them doing – being taken over by owners such as these would be akin to jumping out of the frying pan and into an erupting volcano.

The Toffees do not simply need new owners, they need better owners. And they will not find them at 777 Partners.
