Everton aim brutal chant at Arsenal fans as Premier League title dreams shattered
Sam Wallace has shared what Everton supporters chanted to their Arsenal counterparts as their Premier League dreams started to fade.
Phil Foden gave Manchester City an early lead in their clash with West Ham elsewhere on Sunday’s (19 May) final day of action.
Arsenal needed to beat Everton and hope that City dropped points against the Irons, but that early Foden strike set the tone for the afternoon.
Sharing an update on the Arsenal game for The Telegraph’s matchday blog [19 May 4:11pm], Wallace said: “The Emirates was really noisy and then the sound and fury has just been sucked out of it by that Foden goal.
“We can hear the Everton fans for the first time, singing: ‘You nearly won the league, you nearly won the league’.”
Arsenal fall short in Premier League title bid
Arsenal required a big favour from West Ham against Man City and it was soon clear they were not going to get it as Foden added a second before too long.
There was some jeopardy at half-time thanks to Mohammed Kudus’ wondergoal for West Ham, but Arsenal were locked at 1-1 against Everton at that point.
Everton fans took great delight in winding up the home supporters, but it was nothing personal. They would have done the same had they been playing Man City, for example.

Ultimately, those who made the trip down from Merseyside just wanted to see a performance from their side. Idrissa Gueye’s free-kick certainly gave them something to talk about.
It is a rare occurrence for Everton to have nothing riding on a match, and those that did travel down will no doubt have enjoyed their day in the capital.
