Neal Maupay could cost Everton millions today in final insult as Brentford decision made
Neal Maupay could cost Everton multi-millions on the final day of the Premier League season in what will be his final game for Brentford.
The Bees confirmed on their official website on Sunday (19 May) that they will not take up the option to sign the Frenchman permanently.
While Brentford retain the option to do so heading into the summer transfer window, it now seems very likely he will be back at Goodison Park.
Everton and Brentford jostling for position
Maupay is in line to feature when Brentford host Newcastle United in their final outing of 2023-24, with Everton at Arsenal at the same time.
Everton are jostling with Brentford over 15th place, which the Toffees currently occupy heading into the final round of fixtures.
However, a victory for Brentford against Newcastle and a loss for Everton at Arsenal will see Sean Dyche’s men finish up in 15th.
A draw for Brentford, meanwhile, and a three-goal loss for Everton at Emirates Stadium would also seen the sides swap positions on the last day.
To many, the difference between 15th and 16th means next to nothing – especially when the only aim all season has been to finish 17th or higher.
How much is each Premier League position worth?
However, as per The Athletic [17 May], the team finishing 15th is set to earn around £3million more than the side directly below them.
It goes without saying that Everton could greatly do with that £3m right about now given the ongoing uncertainty regarding the takeover situation.
It means that Maupay could potentially cost Everton millions if he helps fire Brentford to the result they require against Newcastle.

That would be one final insult from a player who cost the Toffees £15m and has yet to show any sort of return value in an Everton shirt, ahead of a potential summer sale.
Maupay may yet have a second crack at winning over the Goodison Park faithful next term if a buyer cannot be found, but hopefully he puts in a stinker in his last Brentford outing.
