Everton told Kalvin Phillips transfer is ‘win-win’ as Amadou Onana exit mooted live on talkSPORT
Danny Murphy has told Everton it would be a ‘win-win’ if they were able to sell Amadou Onana this summer and sign Kalvin Phillips on loan.
Reports have emerged suggesting the Toffees are interested in securing the England international’s services on loan, despite the fact Manchester City would rather sell the midfielder [Daily Mail, 28 May].
While the Blues’ interest has been met with some scepticism from pundits and supporters alike, talkSPORT’s Murphy believes Sean Dyche will be the perfect man to help Phillips get back to his best.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Wednesday (29 May, 11:24) he said: “I don’t know about last chance. If you were to say to me, pick somebody to get the best out of him Dyche would be somebody that I’d say yes to.
“Work in a disciplined structure, get him fit and strong, give him belief and confidence in himself and actually, it makes perfect sense in a financial sense because Everton are going to have to sell a few.
“If they can get half decent money for Idrissa Gueye or Onana and then bring Phillips in on loan it’s a win-win because Phillips is a good footballer. He’s intelligent, he’s got a bit about him, he’s alright but the confidence has drained from him.
“The only way to get your confidence back is by playing and to play well you’ve got to be fit and you’ve got to be given a platform which is a manager who believes in you.”
Will Everton sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City in the summer transfer window?
Although the last couple of seasons have been incredibly tough for Phillips as he has struggled for regular game time at City before flattering to deceive on loan at West Ham, it is clear he is still a very good footballer.
During his time at Leeds United, the Englishman was one of the most exciting midfielders in the Premier League and his good form saw him play a crucial role for England during the European Championships in 2021.

Whether or not he is capable of recapturing that form in an Everton shirt next season remains to be seen, but as Murphy suggested, Dyche is normally capable of getting the best out of players who have struggled previously.
If the Toffees can balance the books financially through the sale of Onana and then secure Phillips as a replacement, it may be the best fit for all parties.
Hopefully, this move won’t hit any late roadblocks and all can be completed as soon as possible.
