Everton transfer update emerges in pursuit to sign Burnley defender Maxime Esteve
Everton and West Ham have both opened preliminary talks in a bid to sign Burnley centre-back Maxime Esteve, according to L’Equipe.
The French media outlet reported on 29 May that given Burnley’s relegation, an exit is on the cards for the French defender who joined in January for £10.2million with the Toffees making an approach to sign him back then as well.
Despite the Clarets’ dismal league performance, the 22-year-old is understood to have a high standing among the Premier League clubs.
Maxime Esteve could partner James Tarkowski at the back for Everton
Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League to the Championship provides an opportunity for the Toffees to secure the signing of Esteve at a potentially reduced fee.
This situation arises because clubs that are relegated often face financial challenges and may need to sell players to balance their books or comply with financial fair play regulations.
Furthermore, players like the 22-year-old, who have shown promise and have attracted interest from Premier League clubs, may prefer to stay in the top flight rather than play in the Championship.
Esteve’s performances for Burnley, despite their relegation, have demonstrated his potential and ability to compete at the highest level.
This, combined with the fact that the Merseyside outfit may be in need of a quality centre-back, especially if Jarrad Branthwaite leaves, makes Esteve an attractive option.
By signing Esteve, the Toffees could strengthen their defence, providing a reliable partner for James Tarkowski and potentially improving their overall performance in the league.

It remains to be seen if they can convince the Frenchman to move to Goodison Park over the London Stadium.
