Surprise Dominic Calvert-Lewin transfer news drops at Everton and Newcastle United

Pete Graves has issued his verdict on Dominic Calvert-Lewin after the Everton striker was linked with a move to Newcastle United this summer.

According to Luke Edwards [23 May], the Magpies have been tracking the Toffees striker for the past two years as a potential replacement for Callum Wilson and could act this summer.

The 27-year-old’s contract at Goodison Park is set to expire this summer, though it has been reported that the club have opened talks with Calvert-Lewin over a new deal. [TEAMtalk]

Reacting to the transfer links via the Fully Loaded Transfer Show on Wednesday (29 May), the Sky Sports journalist said: “I can’t see that, can I just say that? I can’t see that one. I think there was a time when there was an interest in Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but I asked the question the following window, and that interest had gone away.

“I have a lot of respect for the journalist who said that, but, that would surprise me, having had some of the conversations I’ve had about Calvert-Lewin.”

Will Dominic Calvert-Lewin join Newcastle United as Everton contract runs down?

Despite being hit with several injuries during his time at Goodison Park, Calvert-Lewin is still a much-loved figure at the club and continues to have a vital impact.

The Toffees could have been relegated this season with the 27-year-old’s impact in the final few weeks, notching four goals and one assist in his last seven Premier League appearances to help secure safety.

Sean Dyche will be keen to keep the striker at Goodison Park this summer, and so will the club’s hierarchy, already with a new contract mooted.

He has become a key part of Everton’s football since arriving from Sheffield United in 2016, making 247 appearances and scoring 68 goals in all competitions.

While his proneness to injury is an extremely frustrating part of having Calvert-Lewin at the club, there are few strikers who the Toffees could afford to bring in that would have the same impact as him.
