Everton discussions to continue for Ben Godfrey sale
Everton are expected to continue discussions with Atalanta over the sale of defender Ben Godfrey, according to the Liverpool Echo.
The newspaper reported via its website [27 June] that the player entering the final 12 months of his contract at Goodison Park is set to have an influence on proceedings.
The Toffees have already received an £8.4million bid from the Serie A, though the club are holding out for £15million if the 26-year-old is to leave Goodison Park this summer [David Ornstein].
It is understood, as per Dharmesh Sheth, that Godfrey is open to a move away from Merseyside this summer, with the centre-back becoming Sean Dyche’s fourth-choice this season.
Everton to continue talks to sell Ben Godfrey
The Toffees’ defence is one of the strongest aspects of the squad at Dyche’s disposal, with the centre-back partnership of Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski impressing throughout the last campaign.
Their performances have made it difficult for Michael Keane to break into the starting XI, meaning Godfrey’s only real way into the team was by deputising at full-back.
While he did make 13 Premier League starts, slightly more than in the 2022/23 campaign, he was out of position and received mixed reviews from fans as he continued to fill in for injuries.
In addition to those two backup players, the Toffees also have Mason Holgate within their ranks, who had loan spells with Southampton and Sheffield United last season, though neither move really worked out.

If the club are able to secure £15million for their wantaway fringe defender, it is certainly a deal they should take but considering his current contract situation they might have to lower their expectations.
There is a sizeable gap between the club’s valuation and Atalanta’s current bid. If Godfrey is to leave Goodison Park this summer, Everton may need to lower their expectations in the transfer market.
In other Everton news, the Toffees are interested in signing a Manchester United defender as a transfer update emerges at Goodison Park.
