Everton to make quickfire Ben Godfrey sale amid PSR points deduction verdict

Everton may decide to sanction a sale for Ben Godfrey before Sunday to help in their efforts to avoid a third Premier League points deduction, according to the Liverpool ECHO.

The Echo reported on their website (27 June) that the Toffees have received bids Lyon and Atalanta for the versatile defender, with Godfrey said to be open to an exit if an offer is accepted.

Everton were hit two points deductions last season, totalling eight points, for failing to comply with Profit and Sustainability Regulations.

The deadline for the football financial year is this coming Sunday with the Echo saying any deal to sell Godfrey will “significantly strengthen” Everton’s attempt to remain with spending parameters and will be a factor as weigh-up whether to do business before 30 June.

Everton might cash in on Godfrey for PSR reasons

Everton’s financial woes have been well-documented and Sean Dyche managed to steer his side to a 15th-placed finish and 14 points clear of the drop zone last season despite their points deductions.

But the club will be desperate not to get dragged into more battles with the league over financial infringements, while any sales now might also strengthen their hand in future PSR calculations.

Godfrey is a solid-enough option but realistically is not going to be more than a fringe player so if there is a chance to boost their PSR standing before Sunday then it is one they should probably look to take.

With Lewis Dobbin having already been sold to Aston Villa for an undisclosed fee (BBC Sport, 23 June), selling Godfrey would also strengthen Everton’s hand when it comes to their more lucrative assets like Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite, and keep the vultures at bay who are trying to get bargain deals for high-value players.
