Everton face new Premier League competition in transfer battle for Yukinari Sugawara

Everton are facing competition from the Premier League clubs to sign Yukinari Sugawara from AZ Alkmaar, according to the Sunday Mirror.

The outlet has reported (30 June, page 72) that Southampton are “optimistic” of signing the 24-year-old this summer.

Brighton have also “watched” the right back and are set to challenge the Toffees to land the Japan star’s signature.

Sugawara has just one year remaining on his current deal with the Eredivisie side who have already “finalised the signing of his replacement”.

After Ashley Young and Seamus Coleman signed new deals at Goodison Park, the Toffees do have options in the right-back position, especially with Nathan Patterson still on the books too.

With that being said, veteran Young has the versatility to play on the left as well as on the wing when called upon by Sean Dyche.

Sugawara is attracting Premier League interest and with a year remaining on his current contract, he could be available on a cheaper deal.

The Japanese international has played in the Netherlands since 2019 and has played a role in AZ Alkmaar enjoying a good, having finished no lower than fifth during his time at the club.

The 24-year-old is positive with the ball at his feet despite not being the strongest when it comes to winning tackles.

His ability from set pieces and crosses do make him a dangerous option from right back for Dyche, which would be a useful weapon.

They will have to fight with Southampton and Brighton but may have more guaranteed game time available to offer.

In other Everton news, Alan Myers claims that the club will announce a new signing in July and not before the end of June.
