Everton in ‘ridiculous’ PSR limbo as club left in dark over transfers

Everton could still face further problems with the Premier League over Profit and Sustainability rules, according to the Liverpool ECHO.

Writing on their website (12 July), the report stated that the Blues are in the dark regarding how the Premier League accounts for the interest on the loans used for the Bramley-Moore Dock stadium.

The issue was raised in February but the problem was not dealt with in a sufficient time frame and now two weeks after the PSR deadline, there is still no clarity on the matter.

This now leaves Everton in a difficult position moving forward as they aim to remain on the right side of PSR.

Joe Thomas wrote for the publication: “A fortnight into the new football financial year and the ECHO understands there is still no sign of clarity on the matter, a problem that completely undermines the integrity of the process and which leaves Everton in a ridiculous position as the club attempts to navigate what is already a complex area.”

PSR could jeopardise Everton transfer business

Everton were one of many Premier League clubs that were active in the transfer market leading up to the end of the financial year.

The sales of Lewis Dobbin to Aston Villa and Ben Godfrey to Atalanta raised enough funds to keep the club on the right side of PSR.

With the news that AS Roma owner Dan Friedkin had agreed a deal to purchase the club (Sky Sports, 14 June), it looks like the Blues had finally put their financial troubles behind them.

But the Premier League has moved the goalposts again and Everton’s financial future is under question for the fourth time in the past year.

After two point deductions cost Sean Dyche an 11th-place finish in the league, the threat of a third deduction going into the new season is possible.

Given how strict the Premier League has been in regard to PSR, the situation is not only hypocritical, it undermines the hard work the club has done to comply with the rules.

Chelsea are another club that needed to sell before the 30 June deadline and have since continued their ridiculous spending under Todd Boehly (Sky Sports, 6 July).

Aston Villa qualified for the Champions League last season and still needed to sell, whereas Newcastle United played in the competition last season and rushed to raise £68million through two sales to comply with PSR.

Now, Everton are unable to add to the signing of Iliman Ndiaye (BBC Sport, 3 July) with the fear of the Premier League’s decision on their loans hanging over their heads.

Since the Blues received their first points deduction, PSR has dominated the headlines in England.

And Everton are once again in a position where they are at the mercy of the Premier League.
