Aston Villa poised to break record deal as agreement close with Everton for Amadou Onana
Aston Villa could set a new club-record transfer fee if they complete a deal for Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, according to Matt Maher.
The Express and Star journalist shared via his personal X account [13 July] that, depending on how the deal is structured, it could be a club record.
Villa’s current record deal is Moussa Diaby, who the club signed from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth £51.9million last summer, as per The Guardian.
David Ornstein had earlier reported that a figure in the region of £50m was set to be agreed between the clubs.
Aston Villa to break record deal for Everton ace Amadou Onana
Nobody is surprised to see a deal come through for Onana this summer, and with the midfielder making it clear his future lies away from Goodison Park after just two seasons, it only seemed a matter of time.
However, the hierarchy on Merseyside may have been hoping for a slightly higher transfer fee for the 22-year-old, which certainly would have been mooted if Onana hadn’t turned down a move to Saudi Arabia [Sacha Tavolieri].
While the standard price tag reported by Ornstein is slightly lower than the one paid for Diaby last summer, it is impossible to know the exact number, especially with add-ons involved.
Onana’s transfer fee could shoot up even further should he perform well for the Villans once the deal goes through, which seems inevitable at this point.
The likes of Manchester United and Arsenal were known to be interested, but following Douglas Luiz’s move to Juventus, it appears to be a no-brainer for the team that secured Champions League football last term.
With the amount of interest surrounding the midfielder throughout the 2023/24 campaign, Onana was always going to end up moving away from Goodison Park this summer, and the big transfer fee is certainly enough to warrant selling him.
