Everton boss Sean Dyche backed to replace Gareth Southgate as England manager

Everton boss Sean Dyche has been backed to replace Gareth Southgate as the new England manager by Alan Pardew.

Speaking live on talkSPORT on Monday (July 15, 7:56am), the former West Brom and Crystal Palace manager said that he has a list of potential replacements for the current England boss, one of whom is Dyche.

There has been plenty of speculation surrounding Southgate’s future in the last 24 hours, following England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

Pardew said: “I’ve got a few [replacements] on my list, but I think people need to look out the box with this.

“I’ve got number one Pep [Guardiola]. You’ve got to get the best. He knows English football. He’s at Man City, I think we can prise him away from there. He probably needs a new challenge.

“I’ve got Klopp, I’ve got Arteta, I’ve got Potter, I’ve got Howe, I’ve got Mourinho and I’ve got Sean Dyche.”

Is the Everton boss a good fit for England?

Dyche has been tipped to replace Gareth Southgate as England manager, but it’s unlikely to be a good idea. Dyche and Southgate are very similar in their playing styles – both focus heavily on discipline and defence.

Southgate has faced criticism for his conservative approach, and for good reason. Despite leading England to the Euro 2024 final, his cautious tactics often resulted in boring football.

Fans want excitement, not just results, and Southgate’s style has failed to deliver trophies. Bringing in Dyche, who is cut from the same cloth, might just prolong this frustration.

Pardew mentioned big names like Guardiola and Klopp, who bring attacking flair and a winning mentality. These are the qualities England need to finally win something significant.

Sticking with a manager like Dyche could mean more of the same: cautious play, near misses, and no silverware. In the end, England needs a fresh approach, not more of the same. Dyche might be a solid manager, but he’s not the exciting change the team desperately needs.
